Styling bookshelves in your home is so much harder than it looks! You can’t have too much, you can’t have too little – it’s gotta be just right. Like Goldilocks and the three bears… So whether you are looking to redesign your current shelf setup or thinking about buying a new bookshelf altogether, I’ve gathered a few tips on how to style bookshelves that helped me design one of my favorite spots in my home!
Buy Decor in Similar Colors and Styles but Differing Shapes and Textures
I naturally gravitate towards turquoise or blue-green items for my home and in my wardrobe – but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing! You should always have a common theme to create a cohesive thought and color is the easiest to start with. I put together teal colors in different types of items: a book, glass, ceramic figurine and a photo. Mixing different shapes and textures is so important.
Use Stacked Books to Create Height and Depth
I stacked all of my books horizontally to give smaller items (which is what I have the most of) a bit of height. You don’t want the entire bookshelf to be the same height and most of the time your items may be too small in a large space. I also think books look great stacked horizontally because you can actually read the titles.
Throw All of Your Items on the Floor and Add and Subtract Shelf by Shelf
Start at the top (or at eye level) and work your way down shelf by shelf. You’ll naturally grab your favorite items first, so all of the best pieces will be at the most visible locations. It’s really trial and error to see what looks best. Some items you have just might not work in the space but move things around, stack, and layer until it looks just right. Use balance with different heights, sizes, and colors, types or themes of items, and textures. Use books if you don’t know what else to do!
Throw in Personal or Meaningful Items like Photos and Mementos
You will smile every time you look at your shelves not only because you did a great job styling them, but because they are filled with happy memories. The vintage camera is so awesome to me because it says “Official Girl Scout” and girl scouts was a large part of my life as a child. I also have the cutest photos of Chewy because – who wouldn’t?
