How to Style a Long Bob [Video]
UPDATED POST >> CLICK HERE!
In January, I decided to chop off my hair and go for a trendier style for once. It seemed like this one long bob or “lob” kept showing up on my Pinterest and then Bre went for it and I loved it, so my big cut was the natural next step. At first I didn’t know how to style or curl a long bob, but after a couple months I finally got the hang of it.
Have a lob, but not sure how to style it? No fear – I have a quick (less than 5 minutes!) video that can help you out. Watch it now, then keep scrolling for more pictures and a verbal how-to.
How to Style or Curl a Long Bob with a Straightener
Start with freshly washed and dry, ready-to-style hair. I use the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day shampoo and conditioner and it is (no joke) a gift from above. Your hair instantly feels different when you get out of the shower – smoother and softer, way more manageable – and it stays soft and clean for days after. (I try not to wash my hair more than 2 times a week – yes I shower, just don’t shampoo – and this stuff absolutely allows me to do this. Living Proof is not paying me to say this, but I did get free samples which I will be repurchasing ASAP.
Divide your hair into 2 sections on the right and the left side of your heads (like pigtails). Start with whatever side you want, then divide your hair in 1″ sections, divided horizontally across your scalp starting with the lower section.
Divide in 1″ vertical sections starting with the back of your head, working your way forward. Clamp the section in the straightener held vertically and twist away from your face. Slowly drag out and slightly down, dragging down on the end of the hair to avoid the curl and straighten it. Repeat this until that first layer is complete.
Release the next section. Clamp the section int he straightener held vertically (again) and twist this section towards your face. Slowly drag out and slightly down, dragging down on the end of the hair to avoid the curl and straighten it. Repeat this until the second layer is complete. Spray your hair with hairspray if needed.
Repeat these steps, alternating between twisting away and towards your face until you get to the final section at the top of your part. Always curl the top section away from your face. Repeat for the other side of your head of hair.
When finished curling, spray your hair with a texturing spray. I use this Not Your Mother’s Double Take Dry Finish Texture Spray because it’s the best on the drugstore market. It’s new and it can be difficult to locate, so I suggest buying online! Scrunch the spray into your curls and tousle the waves for a simple and natural look. You’re finished!

Great tutorial, but I’m having trouble with where to clamp the hair. In the middle, then twist away from face? I keep getting a weird kink in the middle.
Thanks a bunch! I tried the technique and think I’ll get the hang of it.
Hi! Thanks for this video. I struggle with the flat ir n ‘curling technique’ but this is so helpful. Is your lob cut in layers or blunt cut?
Layers! It helps make it look messier.
Love this!! I’m rocking the lob, too! Super helpful tutorial 🙂
I’m desperately needing a trip! My lob turned into a lopsided medium cut!
What flat iron do you have?
It’s a cheap one from TJ Maxx! I think Revlon?
This long bob looks to cute on you! You are absolutely gorgeous 🙂 Great post XOXO
I’m loving your hair here! This would have been super helpful before I grew my bob out from last year!

Thank you! I think people are just starting to learn how to style them without a hair stylist’s help. 🙂
